If ALW isn't the answer right now: your other options
Not right now is not never. Name the reason ALW does not fit today, then see what most people try next: IHSS, PACE, CalAIM, private pay or a nursing facility.
"Not right now" isn't the same as "never." Sometimes the Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) doesn't fit, and sometimes it isn't ready in time. Either way, start by naming the reason, because the next step depends on it.

Important: If the person isn't safe where they are, don't wait for an ALW slot to solve an emergency. Call 911 for immediate danger or a medical emergency, and work with the current doctor or hospital on a safe placement today; you can stay on the ALW list in the meantime.
Start by naming the reason

| There's no slot yet | Put a support plan in place now and stay ready; the wait doesn't have to be wasted. |
| No home nearby can meet their needs | Widen the county search, or look at another kind of setting. |
| The monthly room-and-board amount isn't workable | Benefits, housing or financial counseling can sometimes change the picture. |
| They want to stay at home | IHSS, PACE or the person's health-plan Community Supports bring help into the home. |
| They need a place today | Make a safe short-term plan that doesn't depend on ALW, and keep the ALW request open. |
Programs people compare with ALW
Each of these has its own page comparing it with ALW.
- IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services) pays for help at home, such as personal care, cooking and cleaning, through the county. Compare ALW and IHSS
- PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) provides all medical and long-term care through one team, generally for people 55 and older who need nursing-home-level care and live in a PACE service area. Compare ALW and PACE

Yes, it's worth asking again
"Not ready today" is very different from "not eligible." A Medi-Cal renewal, a resolved share of cost, the right representative documents or updated clinical records can all change the answer. Ask us which specific condition wasn't met, and tell us when something changes; we'll keep one record so you don't start over.
