Running a dementia care program: daily life, safety and families

Five short lessons for RCFE administrators on the daily side of dementia care under Title 22: hazards, heating devices and water; access to cleaning products, tools and other items; the planned activities program; planning care with the resident and her representative; and the regulated steps when a resident's needs go beyond what the home provides.

Before you begin

What you will be able to do

  • Walk a home's buildings and grounds and say what each hazard needs under sections 87307 and 87219: a barrier when not in use, supervision set by the appraisal, or both.
  • Decide whether a resident may keep a cleaning product, tool or other listed item, and what protects the other residents, to the standard of section 87309.
  • Check an activity calendar against section 87219 and, for a home that advertises dementia care, section 87706, and list what is missing.
  • Plan the admission, care-planning and review meetings so the resident and her representative take part as sections 87457, 87467 and 87463 require.
  • When a resident's need goes beyond the home's general program, take the regulated next step: a consultant and a plan of action, an exception request, or a reappraisal before any notice.
