How the figure is set
For a resident whose income is SSI/SSP, the California Department of Social Services sets what a licensed home may charge each year. In 2026 the SSI/SSP payment in a licensed home is $1,626.07 a month; the home may charge at most $1,444.07 of it for room, board and basic services, and the resident keeps at least $182.00 for personal needs.
If you do not get SSI/SSP
The state sets no cap on room and board for a resident whose income is not SSI/SSP. The home sets its rate; ask for it in writing, with what it includes, before the move. The care is still paid by Medi-Cal under the waiver.
What the $20 is
A home may charge up to $20 more a month only if the resident has income besides SSI/SSP and the admission agreement says so.
What the home may not charge for
The care the waiver pays for. A home that asks a waiver resident for a "care fee" on top of room and board is asking for something Medi-Cal already pays. Say so, and tell your Care Coordination Agency.
